I recently visited Hortus NYC with my roommate, and it was a fantastic dining experience that we both thoroughly enjoyed. From the moment we walked in, we were impressed by the sleek and modern decor, which created a chic and inviting atmosphere. The menu offers a delightful mix of Asian-inspired dishes, and we were excited to try a variety of them. We started with the crispy mung bean cheese sticks, which was perfectly cooked and had a deliciously light batter. Then, we decided to indulge in some of their more luxurious offerings--the truffle and the uni. The truffle rice was rich and aromatic, with a perfect balance of flavors that left us craving more. The uni was incredibly fresh and had a buttery, melt-in-your-mouth texture that was simply divine. The service at Hortus NYC was impeccable. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, offering great recommendations and ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout the evening. The ambiance was perfect for a relaxed yet upscale dining experience, making it a great spot for catching up with friends or enjoying a special night out. Overall, Hortus NYC exceeded our expectations with its delicious food, excellent service, and stylish setting. My roommate and I left with full stomachs and happy hearts, already planning our next visit. This place is a must-try, and I highly recommend it.
We chose this place to celebrate Father's Day dinner and also chose the Father's Day prix fixe menu. First thing, I think the menu is confusing as to which items are included in the prix fixe menu without an additional charge. From the way it looked, it was as if everything had an additional charge. I would advise to have it fixed. I should've taken a pic but didn't. So just trust me on this. The ground floor only consists of the bar and kitchen. The 2nd floor is where the fancy upscale dining is. It got a bit cold with the AC blasting. When we requested it to be turned down, the waitress said they would have to shut off the whole AC. That's a no. We will eat in the cold then. The food was pretty good which is why I'm still giving this spot 4 stars despite my 2 negative reviews of the menu and AC. With our set came a complimentary abalone chawanmushi which was room temp. I'm used to chawanmushi being warm, but it was still good. For appetizer, we had the yuzu bacon rose pasta, king crab noodle, and crispy rice. All were tasty but I think the crispy rice won the appetizer section. For the main dishes, we had the ribeye, truffle donabe with short rib, and the A5 wagyu sotbap. All were also tasty but the ribeye won. That was cooked to medium rare perfection and was a huge portion. Def bang for your buck. For dessert, we had the matcha tiramisu, mango bread pudding, and the chocolate lava cake with raspberries. We could do without the mango bread pudding and chocolate lava cake. 8/10 I do recommend
Went here for a team dinner and they were able to accommodate all 16 of us. We went with a prix fixe menu and were able to add on additional dishes we wanted to try. Definitely recommend the royal seafood platter and sea urchin sot bap. The cocktails were good, esp the seasonal cocktails and premium soju that you can either get it neat or on the rocks.
I came here for lunch since they have a sotbap (steel pot rice) lunch sets now. I came on a Tuesday afternoon with a friend and the place was larger than I expected. The second floor had a lot of spacious seating. I ordered the soft shell crab lunch set and my friend ordered the spicy pork lunch set. Each lunch set came with protein in sotbap, soup, salad, and side dishes (soft tofu, sweet potato noodles, bean sprouts). The soft shell crab was crispy with ikura (salmon roe) and the rice had a lot of crispy bits. I would prefer kimchi or spicy cucumbers instead of the noodles and the bean sprouts which were not that tasty. It's a bit pricey for lunch but the food was very high quality and you do get a lot of food. Service was very friendly and fast. I would come back and try their other sets, the oyster and the steak lunch sets looked good as well.
Great sotbap brunch set. I tried the soft shell crab and it was tasty! Reservations are recommended but not necessary if alone. Worth a try
I have had this restaurant on my bucket list for the affordable tasting menu. The restaurant was pretty small and quiet for a Thursday night. All the dining was upstairs. I reunited with my cousin after 15 years and finally met her kid for the first time. We started out with a cocktail. I got the Oolong High, which was refreshing. My cousin got the 5th Ave cocktail, and she enjoyed it. We ordered the tasting menu, and the portions were small yet filling. 1) Hortus Salad - the calamari was nicely breaded and complemented well with the salad. 2) King Crab Noodle - crab was legit, and together with the noodles, it was the perfect dish. This is worth ordering. 3) Sourdough - the bread dish was tasty, and the olive tapenade elevated it. 4) Truffle Donabe - dish is very good and worth ordering. 5) Duck - Duck was cooked perfectly and pleasantly surprised. 6) Matcha Tiramisu - Great dessert Service was overall great, but initially, I wanted to order the short rib entree and was told that it was sold out. However, there was enough short rib for the truffle donabe. I thought it was odd for an early Thursday evening dinner. I'd personally return to try the lunch sotbap and maybe dinner to try the yuzu bacon pasta and short rib.
I passed by Hortus one day and decided by chance to have lunch here and am glad that I did. Their lunch special is sotbap with a wide variety of different proteins that are suitable for anyone. I opted for the steak sotbap which came with grilled short rib, sautéed mushrooms, scallions, and a cured egg yolk. The meal was absolutely delicious and I wouldn't change a thing. Love the banchan that they gave along with it, there was definitely a generous amount of food given. In addition to the great food, the space was gorgeous and the server was very attentive without being overbearing. I saw a poster up stating that they do jazz night on certain days and I 100% will come back for that. Glad to see that Hortus is doing well and I plan on trying more things on their menu.
Had dinner with my sister who lives in NY and she suggested it. An elevated, modern Korean spot with a NY flair. They have a prix fix menu where you can get an appetizer and main course. I got the yuzu bacon pasta starter and she got the crab pasta. Both were very delicious. The yuzu bacon had a little sweetness to it and definitely tasted the yuzu in the bacon. Wasn't sure the flavors were going to work but they definitely did. And given we were in NY, you know the pasta was cooked perfectly. The crab noodles were also good and they had a szechuan type slight numbing spice but not super spicy, just some heat. We also got the calamari salad which had some nice citrus brightness to it and was a nice contrast to the pasta. I got the truffle donabe which is like a beef bibimpap with truffles. It was pretty good although the rice was slightly over cooked so it went from crispy to burnt which was a tad disappointing. Otherwise, it was pretty flavorful and the truffles didn't over power the rest of the flavors. We got the shishito peppers to accompany the meal and it was nice to have some greens to what was an otherwise pretty carb-y meal. We finished with some desserts which were good but not spectacular. The drinks are pretty good there too and the service was good although sometimes it took awhile to get an order. We sat upstairs which had a classic ambiance to it. It was a very good and different meal which I enjoyed. Not sure I would definitely go again but would recommend if you want to try a spin on Korean food.
This review is for a few months back. Really enjoyed my experience at Hortus. We stoped to celebrate a birthday. We went with the dinner prefix menu and enjoyed the food. However, the service was not as good as we had hoped. As soon as we were brought up to our table a server bringing drinks walked behind my bf while he was taking off his jacket. The tables are pretty crammed together and he bumped into the lady. She then proceeded to give him dirty looks. The place was pretty empty when we came and the restaurant has a modern design but the ceiling/walls had cracks that were repaired with tapes. Overall, we had a decent experience and the food was good.
